TUPELO, Miss. — As the 2024 election is quickly approaching, Americans are worried about the use of AI-generated deep-fakes and how they will manipulate public opinion and affect election integrity. The country has already seen AI deep-fakes manipulate state elections; one example being the New Hampshire January primary where almost 20,000 voters received a call utilizing an AI-generated voice of President Biden. Ben Coleman, CEO of the deep-fake detection platform, Reality Defender, said, “AI developments move fast, legislation must move faster, forecasting and potentially anticipating rapid improvements in the quality and application of deep fakes.”
Since January 2023, over 40 states have presented legislation banning election-related deep-fakes, and eight have signed laws into the books.
As the government affairs affiliate of the American Family Association, AFA Action is urging voters to carefully analyze any election information that they encounter, and utilize trusted election resources in order to detect false information generated by AI.
“The unsettling surge of AI-generated deep-fakes is no longer a futuristic threat we see in science fiction movies — they’re here, they’re now, and they pose a real risk of misleading voters,” says AFA Action CEO Walker Wildmon. “The electorate is already ill-informed regarding the basic facts surrounding American history and why our government is structured the way it is. Our greatest weapon against this misinformation is to be informed. That is why it’s crucial for every American to stay vigilant and critically assess the information they encounter. It’s our job as citizens to protect the integrity of our vote, keep our elections fair, and our constitutional republic strong.”
