TUPELO, Miss. — Women who say they were coerced into taking the abortion pill are criticizing the National Domestic Violence Hotline and Legal Voice for opposing Louisiana’s legal challenge to the FDA’s relaxed regulations on mifepristone. Those rules allow the drug to be prescribed via telemedicine and shipped by mail without an in-person visit. Although the organization acknowledged that abusive partners can exploit the pill to pressure women into ending their pregnancies, they are still supporting the FDA’s policy. In an amicus brief, the group argued that reinstating in-person dispensing requirements “would harm survivors.”
“Mail-order abortion drugs have opened the door to coercion, and both mother and child are paying the price,” said Walker Wildmon, CEO of AFA Action, the governmental affairs affiliate of the American Family Association. “When a man can order these pills and pressure a woman into ending the life of her unborn child, that is abuse. Plain and simple. It’s deeply concerning that organizations claiming to support victims would defend a system that enables abuse and murder. A just society protects both the woman and the unborn child — it doesn’t create systems that destroy them both.”
