TUPELO, Miss. — Last Thursday, Minnesota State Rep. Leigh Finke pushed back on age verification laws for adult websites, questioning whether the legislation would remove sites that are “educational” for LGBTQ+ youth. At the House Commerce Finance and Policy Committee meeting, Finke was directing remarks to Minnesota state rep. Ben Bakeberg, an author of H.F. 1434, a bill that “would require websites where 25 percent or more of the webpages feature pornography to verify that a person seeking to access the website is 18 or older.”
According to Walker Wildmon, CEO of AFA Action, the governmental affairs affiliate of the American Family Association, protecting youth from explicit subject matter should be viewed as important as any other age restriction.
“The question is simple: Should children have access to pornographic material? No,” said Wildmon. “Age verification laws uphold this standard. We restrict minors’ access to alcohol, tobacco and gambling, but somehow restricting their access to sexually explicit material is deemed excessive. Requiring age verification to view explicit content has nothing to do with politics and everything to do with setting a standard that protects the innocence of children. Websites built on explicit content must be held accountable in order to restrict access by minors.”
