TUPELO, Miss. — Writer Matt Calkins resigned as a sports columnist at The Seattle Times after his editors refused to publish an article he wrote on biological men not belonging in women’s sports. Calkins took to Substack after his resignation, stating, “All that’s certain is that I’m done holding back. The best things in life are free — speech being at the top of the list.” Having been at The Seattle Times for 11 years, Calkins shared that this was not the first time the newspaper withheld one of his stories from publication. According to the Washington Stand, “Calkins recalled that any previous piece of his not published ‘challenged prevailing newsroom narratives and likely would have triggered the outrage mob.’”
Walker Wildmon, CEO of AFA Action, the governmental affairs affiliate of the American Family Association, says that Calkins’ resignation exposes the indoctrination of American journalism.
“Apparently, saying men don’t belong in women’s sports is now too controversial even for the sports page,” said Wildmon. “Matt Calkins spent 11 years writing for The Seattle Times, but when he challenged the idea that female athletes should have to compete against biological males, his editors wouldn’t run it. That tells you enough about where we are. Journalism is supposed to make room for uncomfortable truths, not bury them because somebody might get offended. Calkins decided he would rather give up his platform than surrender his freedom to speak. Good for him. Women deserve sports of their own, and no newsroom gets to make that truth disappear by refusing to print it.”
