TUPELO, Miss. — The Department for Social Services in New York City recently unveiled the launch of a homeless shelter strictly for those who identify as transgender. The $65 million shelter — the first of its kind in the country — will be fully funded by taxpayer dollars. According to city officials, LGBTQ+ people need a place to call their own “because trans rights are under attack.”
Walker Wildmon, CEO of AFA Action, the governmental affairs affiliate of the American Family Association, explained how the city’s way of trying to fix its homelessness crisis with a transgender shelter is unjust.
“Spending $65 million to open a segregated homeless shelter based on gender ideology is not compassion — it’s taxpayer-funded discrimination,” said Wildmon. “If you embrace the city’s politics, you get a bed. If you don’t, you get the sidewalk. This is what happens when ideology, not need, becomes the standard for help. New York should be taking steps to fix homelessness, not using it as another front for cultural activism. Taxpayers shouldn’t be forced to fund a system that demands ideological conformity in exchange for basic human needs.”
