TUPELO, Miss. — After revealing how Facebook and Instagram played a role in the state’s youth mental health crisis, a New Mexico court has ordered Meta to pay over half a billion dollars and establish sweeping protections for teen users. This ruling comes after a jury previously ordered the Big Tech company to pay $375 million for breaching New Mexico’s Unfair Practices Act; this brings Meta’s total liability in the case to almost $942 million. Judge Bryan Biedscheid ordered Meta to enact a series of youth-safety measures over the next five years; the requirements include “monthly limits on teens’ use of Facebook and Instagram, restrictions on notifications, tighter controls on adults contacting minors, safeguards for AI chatbots and enhanced reviews of child sexual abuse reports.” However, according to a statement to FOX Business, Meta said it disagreed with the ruling and vowed to appeal.
“For too long, Big Tech has treated America’s children like a product — hooking them on platforms, exposing them to dangerous and harmful content, and cashing the checks along the way,” said Walker Wildmon, CEO of AFA Action, the governmental affairs affiliate of the American Family Association.
“Meta doesn’t get to hide behind an algorithm when children are being targeted, exploited and harmed on its platforms. Parents have every right to expect that billion-dollar corporations aren’t working against them while they fight to protect their kids. This ruling puts Big Tech on notice: if you profit from putting children in harm’s way, there should — and will — be consequences. AFA Action will continue fighting to protect children, strengthen parental rights, and hold accountable those who threaten America’s families.”
