TUPELO, Miss. — Today, the Supreme Court will hear Mahmoud v. Taylor — a case in which Maryland parents are arguing that the Montgomery County Board of Education is violating their rights to freely practice religion as protected by the First Amendment. The parents are challenging the board of education’s ban on opting their school-aged children out of storybook readings pertaining to gender transitions, pride parades and drag queens. “New government-imposed orthodoxy about what children are ‘supposed’ to think about gender and sexuality is not a constitutional basis to sideline a child’s own parents,” the parents wrote in their petition.
Walker Wildmon, CEO of AFA Action, the governmental affairs affiliate of the American Family Association, argues that Mahmoud v. Taylor is not only a case of freedom of religion, but a case of parental rights.
”The Supreme Court should not have to decide whether parents have the right to protect their children, but here we are,” said Wildmon. “Under no circumstances should a school be the deciding party on what a child can and cannot be exposed to; that is the constitutional right and moral responsibility of the parent. But Montgomery County schools are saying no to parents, forcing sexually explicit storybooks about pride parades, drag queens and gender ideology into elementary schools, denying parents the right to opt out for their child. This is not a case of religious freedom; this is a case of parental rights. If the Court fails to uphold the rights of parents to choose what is best for their children, it sends a message to every parent from school districts across America: your kids belong to us now.”
