TUPELO, Miss. — New research conducted by Forest Romm and Kevin Walman revealed that college students are failing to speak their true beliefs, driven by fear of ostracism and academic penalty from the persuasive culture of self-censorship. In their research, Romm and Walman asked students, “Have you ever pretended to hold more progressive views than you truly endorse to succeed socially or academically?” An astounding 88% said yes. “According to the research, 78% self-censor on gender identity, 77% on politics, and 68% on family values. Alarmingly, 80% admit to submitting classwork that misrepresents their beliefs to align with professors’ expectations—a practice so ingrained it’s become “second nature” for many.”
Walker Wildmon, CEO of AFA Action, the governmental affairs affiliate of the American Family Association, commented on the research, remarking on the alarming statistics that reveal the unfortunate reality of college education.
“It is a heartbreaking reality that students are being bullied into faux conformity just to protect their academic standing,” said Wildmon. “A student’s beliefs should never ostracize them from achievement, and the college classroom should not be twisted into a leftwing intimidation zone. No student should have to remain silent regarding their convictions to earn a degree in a country founded on freedom of thought.”
