‘Too often judges have allowed radical ideology to drive their rulings which has led to a tremendous amount of harm to the people of this nation,’ says AFA Action CEO Walker Wildmon
TUPELO, Miss. — During last Wednesday’s oral arguments for the U.S. v. Skrmetti Supreme Court case — the first case to bring transgender procedures before the Supreme Court — Justice Sonia Sotomayor compared the side effects of transgender surgeries to that of over-the-counter pain medications. “Every medical treatment has a risk, even taking aspirin,” she stated. Sotomayor’s comments followed Tennessee Solicitor General Matthew Rice’s defense of the state’s current illegalization of transgender procedures for minors.
Walker Wildmon, CEO of AFA Action, the governmental affairs affiliate of the American Family Association, is hopeful the Supreme Court will rule in favor of the state of Tennessee, as AFA and AFA Action, joined by lawmakers from 23 states who have passed similar legislation, filed an amicus brief supporting the Tennessee law.
“Justice Sotomayor’s comparison of irreversible transgender surgeries and puberty blockers for minors to taking aspirin is not only ignorant but both reckless and dangerous,” said Wildmon. “These are not minor treatments — they are life-altering procedures that cause permanent harm to vulnerable children including but not limited to sterilization. The State has a compelling interest to protect children from harm which is why there’s already a litany of laws on the books aimed at preventing children from harming themselves or being harmed by others, including adults. This case emphasizes the importance of having judges who revere the Constitution and rule based on the clear text of the law. Too often judges have allowed radical ideology to drive their rulings which has led to a tremendous amount of harm to the people of this nation. We are optimistic that the Supreme Court will rule strongly in favor of Tennessee in this matter.”
