TUPELO, Miss. — New research conducted by the University of Virginia and Hampton University revealed that children with engaged fathers were less likely to exhibit depression and have school behavioral problems, and more likely to achieve higher grades in school. In particular, girls with actively involved dads had a greater chance of getting better grades and were much less likely to be diagnosed with depression, while boys were far less likely to face disciplinary action at school. The study classifies “engaged” fathers as those who were able to manage their parenting demands “very well” and frequently partake in family mealtime, at least four times a week.
“New data is in, and it confirms what we’ve known for a long time: fathers matter,” said Walker Wildmon, CEO of AFA Action, the governmental affairs affiliate of the American Family Association. “When dads are engaged, kids do better academically, emotionally and behaviorally. Girls are protected from depression, boys stay out of trouble and grades rise across the board. But the key isn’t just presence, it’s permanence. And this doesn’t happen without marriage. A live-in partner isn’t a substitute for a married father and mother. Our nation doesn’t need more men in homes — it needs men who commit, lead and love as husbands and fathers. These men are the backbone of stable homes and thriving kids. If America wants to restore the next generation, we need to restore fatherhood to its rightful place.”
