TUPELO, Miss. — The role of becoming a parent is one requiring the ability to adapt to a new way of life, asking for God’s guidance through the journey of protecting his children. According to a recent article, “Studies have shown, for instance, that when women become pregnant and after they give birth, physical changes occur in their brains that, some researchers suspect, may help prepare women for motherhood.” “And research shows that new fathers go through similar changes.” University of Southern California Professor of Psychology, Darby Saxbe, who has been studying structural brain changes, and her then colleagues in Spain discovered that “while the structural changes [in men] were more subtle than what has been observed in women, men experienced a reduction in gray matter before and after they became fathers.” In a follow-up study among the first time fathers, “those who experienced more-significant reduction in gray matter volume in the cerebral cortex reported more motivation and engagement toward parenthood,”; they felt more bonded with their babies before their birth.
Walker Wildmon, CEO of AFA Action, the government affairs affiliate of the American Family Association, explains how the recent study underscores God’s given ability to fathers to become caregivers for their children, stating that any laws permitting parents and children from the parent-and-child relationship are unjust.
“Studies affirming brain changes in new fathers underscores God’s design for men to become fathers,” says Wildmon. “The research highlights how fatherhood enhances men’s abilities to problem solve and connect emotionally with their children, illustrating the profound benefits God intended through the marriage and family structure. When men bypass God’s design for marriage and family life, they miss out on these incredible, God-given transformations. These studies are a testament to the divine wisdom in God’s plan for one man and one woman to marry and build families, fostering a nurturing environment where both parents and children can thrive.
“Policies and laws that permit any marital union and parental relationship beyond one man and one woman are cruel and harmful to men and women, boys and girls across America. Our society should not deprive parents and children of the tremendous benefits that arise from the parent-and-child relationship. This is just one example of why AFA Action fights each day to advance policy and legislation upholding God’s design for marriage and family.”
