TUPELO, Miss. — After having their license to serve as foster parents revoked, a Christian couple in Vermont is suing the state for rescinding their license on account of their beliefs towards trans ideology. When initially applying for their foster parent license, the couple agreed they would be willing to foster LGBTQ+ children, but had some hesitation due to their sincerely held religious beliefs. After attaining their license, Antonucci took to social media “expressing support for parental notification if a child expresses confusion about their sex and begins to self-identify as the opposite gender at school.” Her post garnered the attention of the Vermont Department of Children and Families, resulting in the couple’s license being taken away.
Walker Wildmon, CEO of AFA Action, the government affairs affiliate of the American Family Association, is calling out the Vermont Department of Children and Families, stating their decision to take away the couple’s license is clearly unconstitutional.
“The state of Vermont’s decision to revoke the foster care license of Melinda Antonucci and Casey Mathieu is a blatant assault on their First Amendment rights of freedom of religion and freedom of speech,” says Wildmon. “Penalizing this couple for their refusal to endorse radical transgender ideology and harmful medical treatments based on their Christian beliefs is both unconstitutional and an abhorrent example of governmental overreach. They committed themselves to providing a loving home to any child, only refusing to lay aside their Christian values to bow down to a harmful agenda. AFA Action and its Center for Government Renewal are working tirelessly on legislation around the country to defend and restore religious liberties that protect families from such flagrant government overreach.”
