TUPELO, Miss. — Meta announced that it is appealing the New Mexico and California landmark rulings that found the company liable for harming minors. The social media giant “has already taken countermeasures against attorneys looking to recruit plaintiffs on the very social media platforms that they’re looking to fight,” according to FOX Business.
In California, a 20-year-old woman claimed the platforms contributed to her addictive social media use as a minor and fueled her depression and suicidal thoughts. The New Mexico lawsuit found Meta accountable for providing inaccurate information about the safety of its platforms.
According to Walker Wildmon, CEO of AFA Action, the governmental affairs affiliate of the American Family Association¸ “These verdicts are opening the door for parents to take action when their children have been harmed by these platforms. Juries are starting to recognize what parents have been saying for years: these platforms are designed to hook kids, keep them online and profit from the damage. Section 230 was never meant to give Big Tech blanket immunity while misleading families about safety. AFA Action has been pushing for stronger standards and real consequences so parents can hold these companies accountable. If Meta is concerned about these rulings, it should be focused on fixing the product — not blocking families from seeking justice.”
