TUPELO, Miss. A recent Gallup poll, examining American’s views on a variety of cultural issues, revealed that 82% of participants believe that in-vitro fertilization (IVF) is “morally acceptable.” When it came to the morality of “destroying frozen human embryos created by in-vitro fertilization,” 49% of respondents agreed with the destruction of frozen embryos being “morally acceptable.”

Many religious denominations have expressed concerns about IVF and the safety of the unborn. Last week, the Southern Baptist Convention introduced a resolution stating, “In Vitro Fertilization most often engages in the destruction of embryonic human life and increasingly engages in dehumanizing methods for determining suitability for life and genetic sorting, based on notions of genetic fitness and parental preferences.”

“The recent Gallup poll highlights a profound concern about the morality of destroying frozen embryos,” says Walker Wildmon, CEO of AFA Action, the government affairs affiliate of the American Family Association. “Every embryo is a human life, deserving of the same rights and protections as any child. It is deeply troubling that an industry originally intended to help parents achieve their dream of having children has strayed so far from its purpose, allowing greed to overshadow compassion.

“The industry has become driven by profit, prioritizing financial gain over the genuine care and protection of life. In the same way that we advocate for the protection of life from the moment of conception in the context of abortion, we must apply the same standard to embryos created through IVF. We cannot falter on the sanctity of life based on whether an embryo is inside a mother’s womb or in a lab; every life begins at conception and deserves unwavering protection. If the IVF industry had remained true to its original intention of helping parents, rather than capitalizing on greed and morphing into a designer baby industry, we wouldn’t have to address this travesty.”
