TUPELO, Miss. — Last week, President Trump made the announcement that he will sign an executive order implementing nationwide voter identification requirements for the upcoming 2026 midterm elections, whether approved by Congress or not. The president’s statement, shared on Truth Social, follows the House’s recent approval of the SAVE America Act. The legislation would require documentary proof of citizenship when completing voter registration in federal elections, as well as mandate photo identification at polling locations.
According to Walker Wildmon, CEO of AFA Action, the governmental affairs affiliate of the American Family Association, this executive order poses a defining moment for the integrity of the nation’s electoral system.
“The American people expect secure elections,” said Wildmon. “Requiring proof of citizenship to register and photo ID to vote isn’t extreme — it’s common sense. The House has already passed the SAVE America Act, and the Senate now has a clear opportunity to codify a single national standard: only American citizens vote in American elections. If Congress refuses to act, it’s no surprise the president is prepared to step in. Election integrity shouldn’t depend on political hesitation.”
