TUPELO, Miss. — Anne Arundel County Public Schools in Maryland and Ann Arbor Public Schools in Michigan were recently accused of hiding students’ gender transitions from their parents, therefore launching investigations from both the Education and Justice Departments. Government officials are working to examine Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) violations against the districts for “allegations that the districts hid information from parents about their own children’s health and wellbeing, and could result in federal funding being withheld from the schools.” Secretary of Education (ED) Linda McMahon commented on the investigation, stating, “This is not only an affront to basic moral principles, but also to parents’ rights under federal law.”
“Parents are not the enemy of their children — they are their God-given protectors. Any school that deliberately hides life-altering decisions about a child from moms and dads has abandoned its responsibility and violated the trust families place in their child’s educators,” said Walker Wildmon, CEO of AFA Action, the governmental affairs affiliate of the American Family Association.
“The Trump administration is right to investigate whether these districts broke the law and to hold them accountable if they did. Schools exist to educate children, not to replace parents or keep secrets from them. AFA Action will continue fighting to ensure parental rights are protected and that no school receiving taxpayer dollars is allowed to undermine the family.”
