TUPELO, Miss. — AFA Action filed a comment with Missouri Secretary of State Denny Hoskins, strongly urging Missouri voters to reject Initiative Petition 2026-018. The petition seeks to amend Article 33 of the Missouri Constitution to redefine marriage as a fundamental right for “any two consenting adults.”
“Despite what ‘woke’ radicals say, marriage is not a ‘social construct’,” explained AFA Action Senior Legal Fellow Trey Dellinger. “The proposed amendment strips marriage of its essential and defining characteristics, reducing it to an agreement based solely on consent, with no regard for its historical, legal, biological or moral foundations.”
Dellinger warned of the consequences of redefining marriage as an arrangement based solely on consent. “We cannot allow marriage to be redefined according to passing fads. When we toy with the definition of marriage, we undermine the foundations of the family and society.”
If passed, the amendment would open the door to bizarre arrangements. “Since the consent of two adults is all that is required under this petition,” said Dellinger, “it would create a state constitutional right to polygamy and incest. Brothers and sisters could marry. A mother could marry her son. A father could marry his daughter. The consequences would be truly horrific. Secretary of State Denny Hoskins needs to take a close look at this insane petition. Missouri voters also need to vote against it.”
AFA Action is proud to stand up for marriage in opposition to Initiative Petition 2026-018.
