TUPELO, Miss. — AFA Action is urging Congress to restore long-standing pro-life protections to federal healthcare funding as taxpayer dollars continue to subsidize abortion coverage under the Affordable Care Act.
For more than 40 years, the Hyde Amendment has prevented federal funds from directly paying for abortions. However, because Obamacare’s structure bypasses the annual appropriations process, billions in taxpayer subsidies continue flowing to insurance plans that include elective abortion coverage.
In October, over 100 pro-life groups and organizations, including AFA Action, sent a joint letter to Congress, calling on lawmakers to ensure any extension of Obamacare subsidies includes Hyde Amendment language.
According to Walker Wildmon, CEO of AFA Action, the governmental affairs affiliate of the American Family Association, the lack of clear protections for taxpayer dollars reveals where lawmakers truly stand.
“Taxpayer dollars should never pay for elective abortions — yet that’s exactly what’s happening under Obamacare through subsidies,” Wildmon said. “Obamacare has become a backdoor funding stream for the abortion industry, and Congress is looking the other way. There’s no moral gray area here: You’re either protecting life or not. This is a defining moment — will Republicans stand for life, or hand the abortion industry another win and keep forcing Americans to subsidize the killing of innocent children?”
