TUPELO, Miss. — According to a recent report from the Institute for Family Studies, there were 15 million more bachelors than husbands last year among men in the 18 to 39 age group, revealing a widening gap between how American men view wedlock. Compared with a 2.6 million difference in 2000, economic and social changes seem to be driving younger Americans to abandon traditional family arrangements. University of Virginia sociologist Brad Wilcox noted that “marriage and childrearing rates have dropped fastest among working-class men, driven by social changes depriving them of traditional role models.”
Walker Wildmon, CEO of AFA Action, the governmental affairs affiliate of the American Family Association, says this drop in young men wanting to be married and have families signals the decline of the American family.
“30 million unmarried men between the ages of 20-39 should set off alarm bells across America,” said Wildmon. “These are the prime years for marriage, fatherhood, work and building a family, yet more and more young men are checking out of all of it. Pair that with 7 million prime working-age men sitting on the sidelines and birth rates remaining below replacement level, and we have what I would call a five-alarm fire in American culture. This is bigger than politics or ideology. The American family is falling apart, and no society can remain strong when marriage, fatherhood and family formation continue to decline. If we want a strong America for the next generation, rebuilding a culture that values marriage and family has to become a priority again.”
