How Tariffs Are Powering America's Comeback

President Trump’s unapologetic use of tariffs is more than tough talk – it’s a calculated move to rebuild American manufacturing, protect our national interests, and level the playing field. Some conservative economists and thought leaders disagree with the use of tariffs. 

On a recent episode of At the Core, I decided to sit down with economist Jerry Bowyer to break down the facts. Jerry described the tariffs as a tax – but one that can be wielded to bring back high-value, strategic industries like microchips, defense technology, and vehicles. He explained that it shouldn’t be about reshoring everything; instead, we should be focused on reshoring what matters most for our national security and economic independence.

While critics focus on the fact that tariffs have the potential to raise prices and spark trade wars, they often ignore or overlook the big picture that decades of bad trade deals hollowed out America’s industrial base. President Trump’s approach is about restoring what we’ve lost – our ability to make what we need and stand on our nation’s proverbial own two feet. While conservatives might disagree on the use of tariffs, we can surely agree that the result of reshoring high-value manufacturing jobs is the right thing for America. 

The truth is simple: a nation that can’t build, defend, or provide for itself isn’t free – it’s dependent. President Trump is fighting to reverse that.
