I spent some time on a recent episode of At the Core talking with filmmaker brothers Kyle and Shawn Justice of Compel Media about their upcoming project, The Founders, a new film being released as America approaches her 250th anniversary.
Our conversation reminded me of something we often overlook: America did not happen by accident.
The men who signed the Declaration of Independence and later framed our Constitution were far from perfect, but they understood a foundational truth that changed the world: our rights come from God, not government.
That idea may sound simple, but it remains the dividing line in many of today’s political battles.
If rights come from government, then government can take them away. If rights come from God, then government has a duty to protect them.
As we move toward America’s 250th anniversary, there will be plenty of voices eager to focus only on our failures. Certainly, we should learn from our mistakes. But, we should also remember what made this nation unique in the first place.
The freedoms we enjoy today were built on principles worth preserving.
