Only U.S. Citizens Should Count for House Seats and Community Funding: Submit Your Comment Today

Did you know the Census Bureau has been miscounting residents for years, enabling states that encourage illegal immigration to inflate their representation in Congress?

Under the 14th Amendment, the number of Congressional seats each state is allocated is based on “counting the whole number of persons in each State.” The general idea is that population should translate into representation, and elected representatives should uphold the U.S. Constitution and craft policies that serve taxpayers and citizens.

As illegal border crossings exploded under past administrations, the Census Bureau has continued to include illegal residents as part of its count. In turn, certain states are allowing illegal aliens to vote, rejecting commonsense safeguards like voter ID – much less verification of citizenship or legal residency.

The Trump administration is seeking to stop this foolish and unfair policy by requiring the Census Bureau to count only U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents when deciding how many seats each state gets in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Why does this matter?

An estimated 40 out of 435 House seats will be impacted by the proposed Census rule. In addition, census data is used to allocate federal funding to local communities. “Sanctuary cities” that allow illegal alien criminals to evade court orders are not only undermining the rule of law, but they are getting more representation in Congress and drawing down more federal funding than they deserve.

This proposed rule will lead to a more just distribution of political power and funding by making sure U.S. citizens and lawful residents are properly represented.

But the Left wants to keep gaming the system and cheating taxpayers and citizens. We need you to help push back by submitting a comment to the Census Bureau.

It’s easy to make a comment. You can do so in three steps:

1.  Click this Federal Register link, then click “Submit a public comment” (the green button in the top right corner).

2.  Write your comment. You can use the example below and add a few sentences about your community and your views.

Sample comment:

The 14th Amendment is clearly about defining U.S. citizenship, and this amendment governs how the Census Bureau should count persons in the United States. The amendment even says that this count should not include “Indians not taxed,” clarifying that the count is intended to include only citizens and those under each state’s sovereign authority.

I support counting U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents when deciding how many House seats each state gets, but that count should not include people living in the United States illegally. Please ask about citizenship in the 2030 census and explain how you will check legal status. Please also make sure the numbers you publish for small towns and rural areas are as accurate and useful as possible.

Comments close on October 13, 2026. That’s only two weeks away, so please make your comment now. Explain why you think only citizens and lawful residents should qualify when determining representation in Congress and federal funding for communities.
