Increased access to the internet and other online platforms means kids are more likely than ever to be exposed to pornography. Seventy percent of children report being exposed to online pornography, with the initial age being 12-years-old. The consequences are devastating: bad habits and addiction that ruin the innocence of childhood and carry over into abusive or dysfunctional adult relationships.
The science shows pornographic exposure is bad for kids. It’s also commonsense. As adults, we are obligated to do everything we can to protect children from porn. Kids have a right just to be kids.
That’s why we’re reaching out today to ask for your calls and emails to the Oklahoma House to pass a bill that would protect children from pornography, including child pornography.
SB 1959, sponsored by Senator Jerry Alvord, has passed the Senate and is awaiting referral in the House.
The porn industry does not want this bill! The Oklahoma legislation is based on bills 8 other states have already passed, the most recent being Indiana.
The porn predators have started a litigation center just to fight these bills. But guess what? They keep losing in court. Just recently, the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a Texas law that is very similar to the Oklahoma bill. It reduces accidental exposure to online pornography by requiring age verification. Thus far, every single one of these bills has been upheld in court.
Texas, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas. It’s time for Oklahoma to act.
Please call and email your Oklahoma House member and ask them to support and vote yes on SB 1959.
The Oklahoma bill, sponsored by Sen. Alvord, also targets child p*rnography and other forms of ILLEGAL obscenity. It requires websites to remove this child victimization material. It requires websites to remove this child victimization material.
Child pornography, unlike “regular” pornography, has ZERO First Amendment protection. It is illegal in Oklahoma, and it is illegal under federal law.
SB 1959 would not only protect kids from being accidentally exposed to legal adult content, it would help stop ILLEGAL child victimization material.
