AFA Action applauds new Mississippi Pregnancy Resource Act
TUPELO, Miss. — AFA Action congratulates Mississippi Speaker Philip Gunn for sponsoring and championing passage of the Pregnancy Resource Act (HB 1685). The Act was signed today by Governor Tate Reeves.
“All eyes are on Mississippi as we wait on the U.S. Supreme Court to rule on the Dobbs case this summer,” said Walker Wildmon, CEO of AFA Action. “The Pregnancy Resource Act sends a clear message that Mississippi is providing practical assistance to women facing a challenging pregnancy. It also makes Mississippi a leader in passing innovative family policy.”
The Pregnancy Resource Act creates a dollar-for-dollar tax credit for Mississippi businesses that donate to Pregnancy Resource Centers (PRCs). The credit is set at 50 percent of the taxpayer’s state tax burden. The total program has an annual cap of $3.5 million. The Act creates a tax incentive that will help Mississippi PRCs increase the services they provide, including high-quality healthcare for pregnant women.
“The Mississippi Legislature is once again leading the way in passing pro-family policy, showing how the private, nonprofit sector is essential to solving the complex problems America faces today,” said Wildmon. “Instead of expanding welfare entitlements, the Legislature is taking a different approach to helping women and families. This approach emphasizes relationships over welfare dependency and the private sector over government. By using a tax credit to encourage charitable giving, Mississippi is leveraging the power of private giving to increase investments in healthcare services for moms and children. AFA Action is proud to have supported this legislation in Mississippi.”
